Meanland

In 2011, I won a competition to blog for Meanjin and Overland on ‘the future of the book’ as part of a project between the two journals dubbed Meanland. There were four of us – Diane Simonelli, John Weldon, Ali Alizadeh and me.  An eclectic bunch, chosen. I suspect for the way our differences in approach informed and hopefully improved the argument.

Back then, there was much discussion about the future (and possible ‘death’) of the book and libraries, and all kinds of idiots would try to bore you at parties telling you that both were over.  As both a writer and a librarian, writing for Meanland seemed a better response than throwing my glass at them, and more productive than a waste of good gin. The project ended up going for about two years – with each of us blogging once a month. I didn’t realise what I was getting myself into at the time, but I’m very glad I did.

The Meanjin posts have disappeared now – 2011 being akin to the Cretaceous period in internet years. If you’re interested, you’ll need the wayback machine or something similar to find them now.  But you can still find the Overland posts.
