I’d have to say that one of the many fun things about the 23rd Scarlet Stiletto awards and winning the Body in the Library prize was rocking up to the bank and seeing the teller’s face when I handed over a cheque made out to me from Sisters in Crime.
The Sisters, for those of you who might not know, include the cream of Australian Crime writers, reviewers, academics and publishers. Established 25 years ago to promote women in crime, or should I say to promote women crime writers, the group has done a fantastic job, launching or helping the careers of many of Australia’s finest writers by providing support, information, networking and all important acknowledgement through their competitions – the Scarlet Stiletto for short stories and the Davitt award for fiction and non-fiction crime books.
Writers who’ve won, or placed in the Scarlett Stiletto include the fabulous Cate Kennedy, Angela Savage and Inga Simpson – along with a scad of other writers representing a ‘Who’s Who ‘ of Australian Crime writers.
Clan Destine Press have published 11 (and counting) collections or ‘cuts’ of the winning stories. My story ‘The Team From Information Services’ is in the Eighth Cut. It’s a bit of a romp about a group of Librarians in search of some fast money. It won the Athenaeum Library Body in the Library prize – the words ‘body in the library’ had to be somewhere in the text. See if you can find it in my story.
